Saturday Sandwiches

Saturday Sandwiches is our theme for lunch. It’s awesome because:

1. Meal planning is easy. Every Saturday lunch is a hot sandwich, chips, pickle and fruit. See rotation list below – each week is a different sandwich.
2. It’s ready when we get home from sports.
3. We can eat in shifts if running a divide and conquer day. (Mom and dad covering different kids activities at same time on opposite sides of town)
4. It’s easy. Dump meals or freezer prep friendly. I buy and freeze the bread from Costco to save $$. I freezer prep to make Saturday mornings easier.
5. It saves us over $150 a month as we’re eating at home. 5 people fast food lunch at least $40 a week x 4 weeks. $160 at least.
6. The kids like it. How can they complain about a hot sandwich when that’s what they get at fast food anyway?
7. Budget friendly recipes means we eat for $5-$10 for entire family for entire meal. Some even make enough for left overs.
8. It’s fast. Set up like picture before you leave and you can have it plated and served before the kids are changed, have their hands washed and stuff put away.  Even if you don’t freezer prep, dumping two jars of marinara and frozen meatballs or two jars bbq sauce and chicken in the crockpot is easily done on you’re way out the door.
9. If you’ve got an air fryer take it up a notch and do fries or tots in 10 minutes.
10. It makes you seem smart, organized and on top of things. You’re friends will be amazed!

Our four month rotation means repeats aren’t often and variety is always good.

Meatball Subs
BBQ sliders (chicken or pork)
French Dip

Hot Ham and Cheese

Other ideas / Non Crockpot

Buffalo chicken (too spicy for my kids)

Grilled cheese – Pre assemble and do five in the griddle and microwave soup when you get home.

Chicken Patty in air fryer (same as above but w Mayo)

You can find the recipes here:

We do another theme night during the week that is soup/stew/chili crockpot. That’s on the night we have 3 activities and eat in shifts.

I would love some new hot sandwich ideas to add to the rotation. So please comment if you’ve got some ideas.
